2008 Team to Watch: Byrnes
PrepNation.com continues to look ahead to the 2008 high school football season. We're still a few months away from the start of our expanded preseason national rankings release, but it's not too soon to whet your appetite with mini-previews of teams that are likely to figure very prominently on the national scene this season. Of all the teams we have looked at so far early this preseason, perhaps no team has a better looking resume for the preseason No. 1 national ranking than South Carolina power Byrnes.
In his debut season as head coach, Chris Miller led the Rebels to their fifth state champion in six years. It was a perfect 15-0 season capped off by a convincing 48-9 rout of once nationally ranked Summerville in the 4A/Division I final.
Seventeen starters return (9 offense, 8 defense) from that team including all five offensive linemen and the team's top offensive playmakers. Senior receiver Ricco Sanders has sub-4.5 speed and caught 58 passes for over 900 yards with 13 touchdowns. Marcus Lattimore might be the nation's top running back recruit next season. He ran for more than 1,800 yards, had over 400 receiving yards, and scored 30 touchdowns as a sophomore. Junior quarterback Chas Dodd returns under center after passing for 3,208 yards and 32 touchdowns in his rookie season.
Byrnes will continue its tradition of playing a fantastic out-of-state schedule. The Rebels face Florida powers Pahokee (on ESPN) and Tallahassee Lincoln along with traveling to last year's Georgia 5A runner-up North Gwinnett (Suwanee).

You played two extremely average teams from Ohio. Let's call a spade, a spade. The Centerville team you beat last year in overtime was absolutely SMOKED by X 31-6. It was 31-0 at half and almost the entire X varsity roster saw playing time in the second half. In 2006, you were lucky to squeak out an extra point mishap and a missed field goal to beat what ended up as a 5-5 Moeller squad. X smoked that team too, 21-0. The OHSAA has travel restrictions outside of contiguous states. One time per interscholastic season provided that no school time is lost. Since there are no breaks (labor day weekend is the Herbie) in football season, there is no way to loop around this rule. You might think you want Xavier this year after graduating 18 starters, but I don't think you'd want them either.
The story on Byrnes is you left out the fact there is a small 3A school just 30 miles away from Byrens that has beat them seven times out of eight several years back. Byrnes has turned down even scrimmaging the small school numerous times must less wanting to play them again. The small 3A team holds a 4 game win streak on their on Nixon field. Did I mention that the school I am talking about is the Clinton Red Devils of South Carolina. This small school has been winning an average of ten games a season for over thirty-five years. OUTSTANDING feat I might add. So, I challenge the Byrnes Rebels to come get you some, the Red Devils are ready and back down from no team. The way to beat Byrnes is to interrupt their timing, bump the ends and WR's and knock the running backs on their butts.
The last time Byrnes played Clinton was in 1981(27 years ago)not just "several years back". I think Byrnes will have a good year, dispite the tough schedule.
Obvious the Byrnes fan that initially posted stirred the pot and showed his ignorance on the subject but I think Byrnes is an elite national program and I have seen many of the best in the US play in person.
St X was loaded last year to say the least! Byrnes improved dramatically but I do not think they could have handled St X.
I don't think comparing the 2006 scores with Moeller proves much. Byrnes traveled by plane and stayed in a hotel which is a big deal for high school kids. St X did the expected.
Centerville was a long bus ride but I agree Centerville has a great record in the regular season and then gets pastedin the D1 playoffs, the best in the US probably.
I give Byrnes their due and expect them to be extremely impressive this year.

St X should find a way to make it happen. Skip the challange next year and travel to play Byrnes. The way I see it, put up or shut up! We have alot of RESPECT for all of Ohio teams. Xavier is the best of Ohio. Byrnes is the best of SC. After this year we will have played 4 teams from Fla., 2 from Ohio, 1 from Tenn., 1 from Ga.,and 1 from La.(loss). Byrnes has shown that they will play anyone and will travel. The dream game would be Xavier vs Byrnes in Duncan SC. To the Clinton fan,27 years ago? Remember this Byrnes is 83-4 since 2002. Against some top teams. The past 4 years Clinton is 44-10!? Against weaker teams. How many state championships have you won in this decade? We have 5. 17 returning starters off a state championship team is unreal.The Rebels of Duncan,SC will get my vote for preseason #1.
True it has been since 1981. Why? Because they are scared to play the little 3A team because of some point system thing. But I say if they (Byrnes) is so damn good,and they(Byrnes) say they are going to win it all, points shouldn't matter. But the truth be known it's the butt kicking they take from the Might Red Devils. The Nation of High School football should know the truth and that is the Rebels will not even scrimmage the Red Devils of Clinton, S.C. Bobby Bentley turned down three invitations just to scrimmage the Devils. The Rebels may can bragg about beating out of state teams and brag about being on a win streak in state, but one thing they cannot brag about and that is beating the Mighty Red Devils of Clinton S.C. Fork Byrnes, Clinton did. The record stands at 7 wins for the Red Devils and one win for the Rebels between the two teams.They should add one one color to their uniforms and that is a YELLOW streak down the back of the jersey's. once again good luck against small teams. We do play a 3A school Greer. They are next to us. If you can not win a 3A state championship how could Clinton beat Byrnes? Oh yea that's right you have the answer. You may want to share it with Summerville. They could not stop us and have you ever heard of their coach? Sounds like you may be a coach your self. Sounds like the guy from Clinton has a legitimate complaint. Why don't you play them? Is it true they dominated Byrnes in the past? Why not start a new rivalry between the two schools. Are you really afraid to play them? I did do some research, Clinton Red Devils seem to be a team to contend with year in and year out. Why not? You don't have anything to lose but your pride. Let's see Byrnes is striving to be the top ranked in the nation. Clinton has a hard time winning local. When you start talking about top teams in the nation you do not mention Clinton. ESPN knows good teams. This will be the third time we have been on that channel. We are looking forward to this season. Playing at North Gwinnet HS in Ga. at home against Lincoln HS from Fl and on ESPN against Pahokee Fl. We will be playing the only team to beat us in the last 5 years in their new stadium Gaffney HS. They will try to protect that new field. They also will have a jumbotron like ours but a little bigger they say. The rebels of Byrnes HS will be attending the Nike 7 on 7 passing in Oregon this summer. Go Rebels!!
Thanks to Jamie for the foresight of the talent returning to this team. Byrnes will be loaded with RB Marcus Lattimore (predicted top RB in the nation his Sr Season) setiing more school records. With QB Chase Dodd with him to throw the ball they will be hard to stop. Do not over look that Trey Bailey is as good as Chase. He will be a Sr. Also 4 of the 5 starting O-Line will be Sr this year. We have 3-4 D1 players this year and about 5 for the next. Look out Texas next year here we come!
Looks like the Byrnes Rebels still aviated the question. At one time I heard that Byrnes was everyone's Homecoming game, so they too have been at the bottom. Just recently have they been playing decent games and winning. Are you really running from the Clinton Red Devils? I have heard of the Clinton Red Devils for many years, just lately have I ever heard of Byrnes Rebels and I live in Georgia.
Hats off to Byrnes and playing 3 out-of-state teams this year and doing it year in and year out... As a Dreadnaught we appreciated the extra support by your players in Cincy... forget St. X... it will never happen... END OF DISCUSSION! Now, I know a certain team 'wink-wink' that would definitely entertain an invitation so if you have the ability, put the word out! Please keep in mind that a Florida team can only travel outside the state once per year... We had an invitation to play South Panola, MS this year but Coach Castle had to turn them down in favor of the PCC game in WVa., so he passed along the info. to one of his former assistants who took the challenge!
I live in SC and let me tell the prep nation the truth about Clinton. Clinton has a good ball club and program. But! Clinton is not even close to being on Byrnes Level. Clinton is not even the 20th best team in SC. SC teams that are better than Clinton are: Byrnes
Gaffney,Dorman,Rockhill,Northwestern,Daniel,Southpoint,Union County,Marlboro County,Sumter,Berkley,Conway,Beaufort,Myrtle Beach,Cheraw,Blythewood,Blue Ridge,Richland Northeast,Wilson,Westside,Dillon,Summerville and thats not all. All of these teams are better than Clinton or they would be hard pressed to find a win out of all these teams. I just scratch my head wondering why a Clinton fan thinks Byrnes is scared to play his team.
Byrnes has declined three invitations to play or scrimmage Clinton. Byrnes would surley lose to Clinton as they have in the past.The Clinton Red DEvils has the highest winning percentage in the state of South Carolina. Byrnes has just had a few years of winning were as Clinton wins an average of ten games a year and has been doing it for over thirty-five years. They have 7 State Titles, 17 Upper Sate titles and over 35 Region titles. In response to your answer, The Red Devils were ranked 8th in the Nation and when the season was over that same year they were still ranked. Unlike Byrnes who was ranked and fell out of the rankings by season's end. Yes, I would play Pahokke rather than those Clinton Red DEvils, because of past history the Byrnes Rebels have been whooped bad by the Clinton Red Devils of South Carolina. Yes sir,I would avoid those Mighty Red Devils also. If I were winning the 4A sub Div.II title each year I wouldn't want to play and lose to a small 3A team either. It would look bad as it has for over 27 years on Byrnes record.
THe Red Devils of Clinton, SC has been a FORK in our sides for years.

The Clinton Red Devils have been in the lime light for decades, and the Byrens Rebels have just recently been winning. National Champions you will never, be rebs. You can not even hold a national ranking for the entire year(fear the spear} as the Clinton Red Devils have, Again you Rebels are whishing once again. Clinton used to be a great school and lately they have been good. Byrnes is on a different level. HIGHER! Byrnes needs to seek out one of these teams for future consideration... Lakeland, Armwood or STA... their coaching staffs are the best in Florida...
They don't chase rabbits and are not the most talented teams (well except for STA) but they are definitely well coached and it shows...
Dade County has always had the talent and always will but you don't see Legendary coaches coming out of Dade...
I respect Byrnes for scheduling teams like they do... maybe you'll get SLC in Dallas next year... they should be back to full speed or darn near it...

I have been reading some of this crap on here about The Clinton Red Devils of South Carolina and I must say I have been following South Carolina High Schools for over forty years as a Sports writer. Not taking anything from the Byrnes Rebels, but the Red Devils are far a better class of team than the Byrnes Rebels. Clinton has been in the thick of things for years and have only missed the playoffs twice in over thirty five years. Byrnes has just recently started to become a force to reckoned with , while the Red Devils are a force every year. As a sports writer you must be bias in your writing and I feel I have been my entire career.The Red Devils have tried as many as three times to reschedule the Rebels of Duncan South Carolina, but have been turned down all three times. True, the Devils have not won the Big Dance lately, but they have been there fourteen times and brought the Gold home seven times. Byrnes is still just learning how to win, the Devils on the other hand win over ten games a season and are still feared by ALL teams they play or played such as Byrnes, Mauldin, Riverside, Boiling Springs, Dorman, Woodruff, Greer, Union, Hanna, Greenville, Irmo and many more. So you can try to bad mouth ALL you won't too, but just try and play them, The Clinton Red Devils are known to walk the Talk and do all their talking on the field be it their field or yours.

If the Devils even drop to 2A, which I predict will happen, the Devils will still stomp the Byrnes Rebels even on Nixon-Devil field.

Seeding position shouldn't matter if you are going to say you are going all the way.Right? As far as a scrimmage they are still chicken to even scrimmage the Mighty Red Devils, they may get hurt said one coach. Being from SC, the truth is 20+ years ago Byrnes was Div.3A and yes Clinton was a power house football program, Clinton is still Div.3A, and Byrnes has moved into the 4A Div. Clinton cant win a state championship if was mail to the school before the season even started. Byrnes is a National Power, Clinton is not even a state power. Why this subject was brought up im not sure, but it would be hopeless for clinton, its always nise to dream.

We have looked into the History of Clinton Red Devils, and James F. Byrnes Rebels, and what we have found is Clinton plays a very week program year after year, this seems to be why they have a winning record most years, on the other hand, Byrnes playes a much harder season year after year, and also has a winning record. So by the numbers, Clinton would not be where they are in the 3A Div. if they played the same teams in the same Div. as Byrnes. If Clinton wants respect for the record they have now, then they need to have a few more state championships in the future, and not stand on a record from years in the past. We have found that Byrnes is a great football program not only in the state of SC but also in the Nation and that is why they look to be at our #1 National Ranking for the 2008 season. Thanks
