URBANDALE, Iowa -- The Northeast's most dominant team of the decade now has a National Prep Poll title to show for it. Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) is No. 1 in the final National Prep Football Poll of the season, becoming the first team from the region to finish as the country's top-ranked high school football team in the 23-year history of the poll.
The Ironmen won their fourth consecutive Non-Public Group IV state title and sixth in eight years. They defeated six teams that were nationally or regionally ranked this season, including a 30-6 blowout in week one of eventual California Open Division champion De La Salle (Concord). Texas 5A/II champion Abilene, which went 15-0 and won its first state crown since 1956, finished the season ranked No. 2. North Carolina 4AA titlist Butler (Matthews) is ranked No. 3 and two-time defending Tennessee Division II-AA champion Memphis University closed the year at No. 4. Rounding out the top five is Lake Travis (Austin), which ended the season with its third straight Texas 4A title and a 46-game winning streak. The National Prep Football Poll is compiled by high school sports journalist Jamie DeMoney with input from sportswriters, experts, and coaches. FEATS OF THE WEEK: For the first time in the 23-year history of the National Prep Poll, the final No. 1 ranking belongs to a football team from the Northeast region. Prep Poll titlist Ramsey, N.J., Don Bosco, which has won 23 consecutive games, captured its fourth consecutive Non-Public Group IV state title. The Ironmen won six games against teams that were nationally or regionally ranked this season, including victories over California Open Division champion Concord, De La Salle and Alabama 6A runner-up Prattville. Don Bosco's senior class featured state player of the year Tony Jones (uncommitted), who ran for 1,387 yards and 36 touchdowns, along with five other players headed to BCS-level Division I colleges. This is the third Top-10 final ranking in seven years for Don Bosco, which has six state titles and a 117-11 record in 10 seasons under coach Greg Toal . . . Meanwhile, No. 2 Abilene, Texas, won its seventh state championship, but first since 1956. The Eagles defeated regionally ranked Katy, 28-17, in the 5A/II final at the Alamodome, ending the Tigers' hopes for a third straight state title.
